Anybody can create a logo, but will the logo created do your business justice, if designed by someone without the qualifications and know how?
I've seen many examples lately of my niece did the design, etc. It is all very well to accept the corporate identity that someone in your family has lovingly put together for you, but remember when you start creating signage and a business identity with the logo you may be stuck with it for quite a while. Be brave, be honest, and remember that a graphic designer may cost a little up front, but in the long run your business will benefit from the experience and ideas that a qualified person can give you.
