There are some very nasty scams on the move. I had the miss pleasure of receiving a phone call from a company parading as a windows IT company. They told me they had been monitoring my computer and that I had some malicious files that could cause my computer to die if I didn't follow their directions. I knew that something stank, but I followed along with the conversation just to see how far they would go. They told me to go to my startup menu, that's fine if I was running with a PC but I use a Mac. After speaking to several different people, I found myself talking to the supervisor who after discovering I was using a mac, wanted to end the conversation very quickly.
Please be careful of anyone who says they have been monitoring your computer, no one should ever be able to observe your computer for viruses unless you are working for a company that requires an IT desk. Ask as many questions as possible if you are ever unsure.
